 Upon setting a user icon in "About me" in KDE's system settings, buddy
 icons are no longer displayed, or according to people I have spoken with,
 even appear to others.

 Not entirely sure what could be causing this. I determined that it was
 "About me" by dumping prefs, and restarting.

 Even leaving the buddy icon set to the system default, it still does not
 show up in the IM boxes, despite "Show Buddy Icon" being checked.

 Just to be clear: nobody can see my buddy icon, and I cannot see anyone
 elses buddy icon.

 I am available to do any kind of logging/dumps/etc to help track down the
 exact issue.
