Comment (by drinksoymilk):

 I too am running SuSE-10.2 -- openSUSE 10.2 (i586). I downloaded,
compiled, and installed pidgin-2.0.1 today. What I have noticed is if I
have the check box for Tools, Preferences, Sounds, Sounds Preferences,
'Sounds when conversation has focus' checked, I will get sounds when the
conversation has focus. In other words, if I do not have a conversation
running and I get a message, I do not get any sound. However, when the
conversation dialog is displayed, I *do* hear a sound when I send a
message and *do* hear a sound when I receive a message. I have Enable
sounds set to Always. Note, the conversation dialog doesn't necessarily
have to have the focus, but it does have to be open to get sound.

If I uncheck the 'Sounds when conversation has focus' check box, I do not
 get sounds at all.

The Method is set to Automatic. I tried with Console beep and got the
same results. I am not sure if that rules out gstreamer or if the fact
that I get sounds when the conversation has focus rules out gstreamer as a
problem. My symptoms seem to indicate more that the settings in the
dialog are not being handled properly.

Please let me know if you require further details. I do not know how to
determine the gstreamer version so please be explicit if you require those
 kinds of details.

I believe in my initial tests, I had 'Only when not available' checked for
Enable sounds. I would get the initial sound but after that I would not
get a sound. That behavior made sense given the description but
eventually I would not even get the initial sound.

Artemido, perhaps you can try these settings to confirm whether you get
the same results. One other item that I tried is using the sound test
facility at the bottom of the Sounds tab. The sounds played properly.
Artemido, do the tests work for you?

 Thanks.
