 That's exactly the same behaviour I'm seeing. It seems like the away
 message system in ICQ6 was changed. I looked at the official client and
 now you can easily set some custom status (they call it "Note Title" and
 optionally add a "Note Text" which is the actual status message). Neither
 can be seen by Pidgin.
