 When you run 'echo $SHELL' from a prompt, it returns /bin/sh or /bin/dash?

 I cannot repeat this, even with dash, here.

 I really don't think your Pidgin should be receiving a SIGHUP at all, and
 this is the source of the problem -- I think this is not a Pidgin bug.
