 I find it hard to believe that nohup would not work.  If you run Pidgin in
 nohup and then do the gdb trick from before (you'll have to find the
 Pidgin process in 'ps aux', the number printed when you run 'nohup pidgin
 &' will be the PID of nohup, not Pidgin), does it still break with a
 SIGHUP?  (If it does, your nohup is horribly broken.)
