 emoticons.txt? is this the file where the settings about custom smileys
 are stored? such a file isn't found on my system. did i miss something?

 yepp, same here: after restarting pidgin, all custom smileys are gone.

 btw. i did more like the way this worked, when i only had to put the
 smileys in the right directory, without the need to add them all by hand.
