 I'm seeing the same problem as in the original report.
 The only difference I can see between both is that the icons with rounded
 borders are jpgs, and the ones without are pngs.
 Now, the pngs *could* have transparency, but in this case, none of them
 have it (or at least it's not obvious). The people using them just added
 some picture in msn messenger, so it looks like that client is generating
 pngs possibly with some transparency bit or something that is fooling
 pidgin.

 Ok, so this is not a big problem, but it uglifies the otherwise clean
 pidgin contact window since around 30% of my contacts exhibit this
 problem.

 I saved some examples of the png files if anyone wants to look at them.
