This is from Sourceforge bug 1581434, which doesn't seem to be available
 anymore.

 Originally I said:

Maybe this bug should be filed on myself, but I don't
understand what the "typing" business is when I select
Online, Offline, etc from the bottom of the gaim
window. Especially not Offline. When I want to go
offline, I want it to go offline right away, most of
the time because I'm leaving work for the day. I'm
always worried that I'll forget to press enter.

Similarly, I don't like having to press enter when I
 try to go online/available.

I don't know what the right solution to this is,
though. I don't like advocating preferences on this
sort of thing, but perhaps there is no better way...

Later, I was told that there was a timeout for this feature, but I still
 have a mental barrier:

One major problem I've got with it is that I don't get instant feedback
that I am online. How about if the status change (online, offline,
away, etc) happened right away, and typing and pressing enter in the text
box set the status message? If that was the case, I think I
would have more easily discovered the timeout. As it is, right now there's
a psychological barrier that says "I have to press enter or this
 status change won't happen."

There was never any further discussion on this bug/RFE.

I would prefer if the offline/online/etc status changes applied
immediately, with the further ability to edit the status message
afterwards. That, I think, is the perfect compromise between the two
worlds (mine: I don't care about the status message, and just want to
effect my status change immediately; others': I want to effect a status
change ''and'' change my status message).
