 It seems that Pidgin does not properly handle UTF-8 characters in Jabber
 passwords. On the jabber.org server (running ejabberd) I was able to log
 in via telnet as a user whose password contained the character U+00F6 (ö),
 but the user was not able to log in via Pidgin. When I changed the user's
 password to contain the string "oe" instead of "ö", the user was able to
 log in via Pidgin.
