Comment:
A 'connect/disconnect' button doesn't make any sense in pidgin because of
how the status system works, a disconnect button would disconnect an
'enabled' account only until the next the status change, which would
decidedly *not* capture what the user expects. Similarly, a user could
*never* connect a 'disabled' account.
Furthermore, I very rarely hear anyone being confused by the enabled
checkbox, though I will admit that needing to toggle it do do a quick
reconnect is less than clear (but for the most part you shouldn't ever
need to reconnect a working connected account so I'm not too worried about
this).
The New... dialog, while not a simple dialog, is rather clear in that you
can set a global status and override that status for specific accounts.
Most of the people who need such a feature (that we see) understand this
with little-to-no effort, a number of people (like yourself) fail to find
the expander, which is something I do not understand, but which is
something that we would like to address if you have any constructive
suggestions. Simply starting the expander open is an option but would
likely overwhelm all of the people who never need the functionality it
presents.
The fact that you are unwilling to experiment is not something we can fix.
Nor is the dialog particularly confusing. When you use it to create a
status the main section defines the global status which applies to all
'enabled' accounts and the expander at the bottom allows you to override
this status for any specific 'enabled' account you would like. End of
story. I believe we used to have a write up on the status system on the
old website but can't find anything of that sort currently, adding such a
write up again would likely be a good idea.
Any specific, constructive, suggestions for how to make things more "user-
friendly" are always welcome, general grousing about how the current state
of things isn't is not.
I am going to close this ticket as changing the name of the enabled column
is not going to happen, nor is it likely that we will add a separate
'connected' button anywhere, though if a clean patch were written to add a
'reconnect' item the to Accounts menu that would likely be acceptable.
