 >I believe we could have a dropdown for the status type in the accounts
list directly which would be fully functional but putting a small single
line entry in the list to handle the status message would not be. Consider
that the dialog includes a formatting toolbar, the single line entry never
could. Consider that many people like setting complicated multi-line
status messages, dealing with that in the single line entry would be a
 nightmare.

Add a button on the right that will popup the full dialog with formatting
options etc. The majority use cases for status messages is that you only
need one line with no formatting.

Make simple things simple. In Pidgin's case the simplest things are
 horribly complicated.

And yes, I believe that the "exceptions" list must be renamed to "custom
status" list and should reflect the actual state of my accounts. I've
shown you the two cases that are either not handled by pidgin at all or
 are not useable at all.

 > Assuming I understand you correctly when you said 'set global status to
invisible. set one account to available. when you click on global status
list "available" is selected' I believe that is a bug that should be
 reported.

There's no way you can easily handle this 'bug' until you devise a way to
show the exact status of each account I'm connected to

 > Given the complaints about the status interface

Yes, if you design it the way mystatusbox plugin is designed, I'll be the
first to complain. A grid with (buttons and/or icons) that show a popup
menu will cover significantly less space. Let icons show the acual status
 - a picture is worth a thousand words as they say ... and both pidgin and
 mystatusbox rely exclusively on text.

 > Yes, I almost never change status without setting a message

How often do you use formatting in your messages?
How often your messages span more than one line?
How common is your usage pattern?

 > Being disconnected is not a status

From a user's point of view, it is and it should be. Stop thinking like a
programmer. Bring your grandma over and tell her about "transient errors"
 and "exception lists" ;)
