 For as far as I can tell after lots of experimentation, group order isn't
 saved server-side, or at least not for MSN, ICQ and XMPP.

 So sort options still make lots of sense. Not everybody has a notebook and
 only few people work on one PC only, and reordering the groups whenever
 and wherever you install Pidgin can be very tedious if you handle many
 accounts with lots of groups. Also, other messengers sort their groups
 (Kopete, Windows Live Messenger, etc.) so it would make the group order
 more consistent among messengers, and make Pidgin a little more
 accessible.

 Of course, there are more then one way to sort groups, so perhaps some
 general sorting functionality could be introduced. However, for me
 personally only alphabetical sorting counts. And it's also the most
 obvious for of ordering groups.
