 I can confirm this problem with Pidgin 2.2.2 on Gentoo Linux. I connect to
 the Internet through a transparent proxy.

 I have the following options:
 Server: messenger.hotmail.com
 Port: 1863
 HTTP Method server: gateway.messenger.hotmail.com

 The error message is:
 email at address.com disconnected
 Connection error from Notification server:
 Reading error

 Does anyone know how to tweak the settings so as to make the connection
 work?
