 I am writing from Drexel University Libraries’ Systems department. Our
 reference staff use GAIM for our IM reference and chat logging. I am
 working on upgrading to the current version of Pidgin and was using the
 helpful instructions at...

 ...to setup centralized settings/logging but I’m having trouble making the
 software work.

 Basically, I’ve set the Environment Variable manually or with the registry
 edit file. I setup Pidin on my machine with all of our accounts and copied
 the c:\documents and settings\username\application data\.purple files to
 our shared SAN space. But when I install Pidgin and set the environment
 variable on other people’s machines, the client opens and doesn’t appear
 to “see” the PURPLEHOME location; it prompts as though it has no
 user/preference settings. I removed Pidgin from my machine and re-
 installed it. I set the variable…and had the same result.

 Do you know why the client-running machines do not see the PURPLEHOME
 location?

 Not sure if this is related, but a sidenote:
 Our central logging area is a SAN space. I used the registry edit file
 template on the UNC page, but found it would not make the Environment
 Variables change. I’d run the file, it would tell me if was modifying the
 registry, but then the registry would show no evidence of having been
 modified. I ended up setting the variable manually and exporting the
 registry string value that was created by the manual action. This exported
 key, when double-clicked, DOES make the correct registry mod to other
 machines, but it doesn’t look much like the one on the UNC site…it is much
 longer. The contents are pasted after my signature.
