 My understanding is that this isn't a Pidgin bug and happens occasionally
 to programs that run at startup time due to what is apparently a Windows
 bug.  [http://groups.google.com/groups?q=notification+area+icon This
 Google groups query] includes a number of descriptions of other
 applications with the same issue.  I've had it happen to me with other
 applications a number of times

 I don't think there is much that we can do about it - if there is, I'd
 love to know it.
