Comment:

 That they are not useful is plain wrong - there is information in the
 tooltip that isn't available elsewhere.

 You can disable them manually by setting the "tooltip_delay" preference in
 `prefs.xml`  to `0` (edit when pidgin isn't running).  The only reason
 that the pref is there is because there is/was a long running GTK+ bug
 that makes the tooltips not go away.
