 This sounds like a problem I had a while ago (memory is abit foggy), which
 took me forever to solve. I looked but oddly enough can't find the ticket
 again which had the solution for me. Exactly same symptons and the mention
 of WinStyler makes me think this is related to
 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316645 [programs with keyboard
 hooks compiled with borland tools]..

 In my case it was LEFTOVER StarDock.dll still being loaded after I
 uninstalled all of it. Also at one point one the plugins in WinAMP was
 causing the exact same problems. (I believe one of the Tray Control
 plugins.)

 Running in w9x compatibility mode somewhat made Pidgin usuable as it
 didn't automatically dump me on startup, was very unstable though.
