proxy

Summary: Using a fresh installation of the newest (as of 11/14/07) windows
binary, Pidgin reliably freezes/crashes/becomes unresponsive & must be
killed with the Windows "End Now" functionality when attempting to connect
through a non-authenticated HTTP proxy.
----
My company uses a HTTP proxy with '''no''' authentication. I am able to
connect to Google Talk through the GTalk application using this proxy.
I tried installing the most recent version of Pidgin today on my Windows
XP system, and filled in the HTTP proxy section of the preferences
(leaving everything else as the default, and not setting up any plugins).
I then set up my Google talk account (again using all default settings).
When attempting to connect, Pidgin freezes completely and becomes
unresponsive.
The applicable section of the debug file follows (with identifying details
removed):
{{{
(12:10:17) connection: Connecting. gc = 015D4798
(12:10:17) dnsquery: Performing DNS lookup for [proxy server details
removed].com
(12:10:17) dnsquery: IP resolved for [proxy server details removed].com
(12:10:17) proxy: Attempting connection to 128.[IP Removed]
(12:10:17) proxy: Connecting to talk.google.com:5222 via [proxy server
details removed].com:31060 using HTTP
(12:10:17) proxy: Connection in progress
(12:10:18) proxy: Connected to talk.google.com:5222.
(12:10:18) proxy: Using CONNECT tunneling for talk.google.com:5222
}}}
Even after allowing the application to run/hang for over 30 minutes, it
never moves past that "Using CONNECT" step.
