 Ignore that last comment, I'm reading too fast.

 Either remove the locally installed pidgin and libpurple that you compiled
 and put in /usr/local, or remove the packaged version of pidgin and
 libpurple.

 Basically you have two copies of pidgin/libpurple and they are getting
 confused with each other.
