Comment:

 The names in the tabs still change, but if you have only one tab open you
 may not be seeing the tab where this is happening if you have top tabs (as
 a single tab and the infopane are considered redundant by most people and
 caused complaints) switching to side or bottom tabs, opening a second IM
 window, or turning off the infopane should all allow you to see the tab
 and thus the typing status again. I believe it is planned to add the
 typing notification to somewhere else in the conversation window to help
 this (and to make it more obvious) but I don't know what the status of
 that change is (it may already be in the code and just not released or it
 may not be written at all, I don't know).
