Comment:

 You can currently set status per-account in pidgin, look at the expander
 at the bottom of the status editor dialog.

 If you in fact have work and personal groups you can use the 'by group'
 conversation window placement option to have a work window and a personal
 window which should satisfy much of your request, clearly not if you
 actually want them in one window and actually want different colors, but
 the idea is the same.

 Do those work for you?
