Comment:

 (In [017296ee954fb91349806c809983c916842603da]) Fix the notorious
 log_reader plugin crash.  It turns out that the file contents being freed
 wasn't the original pointer and, naturally, that doesn't work.  There is
 some additional cleanup and prevention of unnecessary allocations.  Fixes
 #3461, #1249.
