 I built it from sources on SuSe 10.2.

 Actually, I just discovered the problem (on my system at least).

 Before installing applications (which require root privileges) I run them
 from their build directories.  Pidgin isn't happy unless it's installed.
 After running "make isntall" as root pidgin was able to populate its
 protocol list and connect to yahoo and aol without crashing.
