 does it list them as belonging to? You are talking about buddies and not
 about groups, right?

 When I deleted her account (from the Accounts dialog) all her buddies
 moved to my buddy list (to the group buddies) no matter which group they
 where in to begin with. They are online from time to time and have gotten
 friend requests from my account. Can't check the hover since I manually
 deleted them from my list but when i checked the blist.xml (or whatever
 its called in ~/.purple) they where all listed under my account. And yes
 buddies not groups.
