Comment:

 True, upgrading will not fix an existing ~/.purple/prefs.xml and you will
 need to manually edit it. If your /etc/prefs.xml is correct with the
 upgraded package and the manual fix worked for your prefs.xml I'm going to
 close this as fixed.
