 Sorry, my email died, I changed now the profile to a working one.

 The problem is still actual, happened with pidgin 2.2.1
 I issued the command "/list #alt*" and pidgin locked up with 100% CPU
 usage for a minute or two. Then it resumed to normal operation. I did not
 try to close any windows as in my first report.

 Yep, the server is running. Maybe it is restricts connections.

 You tried with other servers ? It is an IRCnet server.
