 I know the debate, and even though my proposition would sound similar to
 your quotation above, please consider this carefully :

 == REQUEST a way for the user to customize the layout of the message
 window.
 As an examples I submit two attachements :

 1) screenshots taken from Mozilla Thunderbird, which has adopted a feature
 that existed  in the old Netscape 3.x, 4.x days, the main window layout
 can be set to "Classic", "Wide", "Vertical".

 2) screenshot from XnView - a free image viewer and organizer, the browser
 window layout which features a treeview panel, an image preview panel and
 a current folder thumbnail view panel, can be chosen from several possible
 layouts
