 Since upgrade to 2.2.1, I've seen this many times.

 assume a buddy has an alias set.

 when I start pidgin and I have an offline message from that buddy, in the
 conversation window I see the message(s) left by this buddy and
 ''' XXXXXX is now known as YYYYY. '''

 If I have pidgin running, the first time during that run session that I
 receive a message from that buddy, again, I get the same message, once.
