 Pidgin isn't (with a few exceptions such as DNS lookups) multithreaded, so
 it is possible for this scenario to occur if something is causing the
 process to block waiting for something.

 However, there shouldn't be anything that blocks, all of the I/O calls are
 (supposed to be) non-blocking, so it isn't clear to me when this would
 happen.
