 I had this same problem on Ubuntu when upgrading from Feisty -> Gutsy
 (7.04 which used gaim to 7.10 which uses pidgin).  It may have been
 compounded by the fact that back this summer I temporarily installed
 pidgin alongside gaim in June.

 Initially after upgrading to Gutsy I had account settings similar to in
 June.  So, I exited from Pidgin, moved the .purple folder to .purple_back
 and restarted Pidgin.  That was when I got a very similar error.  After
 exiting pidgin, deleting the .purple folder, and then copying my .gaim
 directory to .purple everything works as expected.

 Also, I believe http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/1851 is a duplicate of
 this issue.
