Comment:

 Hm...when I change the preferences listed above, I don't see anything in
 the debug window.

 As for the libpurple engine, I've got the same version as Pidgin,
 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4

 I did once try installing Pidgin from source (can't quite remember what
 version, but it was several months back). I erased the source directory,
 though come to think of it I didn't look for any ~/.purple directory that
 may have been created at the time.
