 I was in on #3682, so will chime in here.

 I thought I was closely tracking new pidgin releases and this bug only
 appeared in 2.2.2 for me. Not only does "auto-join" not work, but it also
 makes the chatroom tab hidden from view and you can't double click the
 icon to get back in.
