 If Help->About says "XScreenSaver: Disabled"" then pidgin can not auto-
 return when you unidle in X, it should still do so if you send a message
 though (assuming you have that option on in the preferences, do you?
 Preferences->Status/Idle->Report Idle Time?

 As to whether that should be finding it or not I'm not sure, if you can
 attach the relevant section of your config.log (or the whole thing if you
 don't know what is relevant) I can look a little more.
