 Changing the accounts username isn't a good idea; that is effectively the
 "Primary Key" of the account and will cause all sorts of problems.

 IIRC, when this was discussed in #pidgin, the conclusion was that (because
 there wasn't a concept of a "Server Alias" for accounts), we should set
 the Local Alias, but only if it isn't already set.

 It might be worth thinking about adding a server alias to the account as
 it will support this type of scenario, as well as the /nick stuff for IRC
 and MSN friendly name better, but i think the Local Alias as described
 above is an acceptable compromise with the current API.
