Comment:

 First of all, a system on which the hostname is not set is improperly
 configured -- if you're seeing that, you should fix it.

 That said, this is clearly something we can handle more gracefully.  It's
 not clear what the ''right'' thing to do is, so I'm going to default the
 hostname to simply "localhost" if it is unset.
