Comment:

 Yes, it does defeat the purpose of the invisible status.

 Checking an AIM user's profile to detect if the person is actually online
 is a pathetic hack (at best) and is certainly not going to work on other
 networks.  It would almost certainly hit the rate limit threshold on large
 buddy lists, as well.  Note also that the accuracy of this method is very
 limited--if I am online but invisible and you find that by reading my
 profile, then I sign offline, your client would still think I was online
 for some time until another profile read attempt happened, thus being
 completely stupid.

 I, for one, am quite violently opposed to the introduction of this
 misfeature into Pidgin or libpurple.  Anyone so paranoid about their
 buddies' online status can go either get a client that caters to this type
 of paranoia or go to the effort of writing a plugin to inflict this abuse,
 in my opinion.
