 This patch "forces" endpos to be the same as endpos2, thus circumventing
 the "save ourselves" guard on line 926. I'm a little uncomfortable with
 this, because resetting endpos all the time is a bit of defensive
 programming to guard against misalignment and so on, but a better solution
 hasn't occurred to me yet.
