 Windows 2000 seems to be able to handle all the way to 24-bit. You're
 thinking of the Windows 2000 system tray restriction on 4-bit icons. The
 conventional limit for Windows 2000 is 8-bit with custom palette, although
 it will display 32-bit icons with the alpha channel converted into a 1-bit
 mask (which tends to not work well). 8-bit and above system tray icons are
 still converted down to 4-bit, badly, as you can see with Winamp.

 I don't see why one, and only one icon would come up blank, since all
 other Pidgin window icons work perfectly. It may, though, still be
 something to do with a missing 8-bit icon? Maybe only Windows Explorer can
 handle 32-bit icons as 24 bit plus mask?
