#3033: Since changes in the preferences menu, Pidgin has been crashing at startup

 Pidgin was running happily till I decided to make some changes in the
 'Preferences' menu. The changes were to uncheck the box that automatically
 changes my status to "Away" after a certain time.  As soon as I closed the
 'Preferences' menu, Pidgin crashed and I've never been able to start it
 again.
