Comment:

 The problem is that your prefs.xml file contains invalid utf-8 data for
 one of the paths stored in it.

 I don't think pidgin will save corrupted data for this anymore, but
 previous data may well be corrupted.

 Deleting/Renaming your `~/.purple/prefs.xml` should get you going again.
