#3056: Multiple Instances of Pidgin
--------------------------+-------------------------------------------------

I need to run multiple instances of Pidgin. At work we have a shared
Pidgin application that's used by multiple people on a 24x7 basis. When
I'm at work I want to be able to run my Portable Pidgin from my USB drive
without interfering with the other Pidgin.
I looked at the FAQ at
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#HowdoIrunmultipleinstancesofPidginonWindows
The problem is it doesn't seem to fully answer the question. It says
"Pidgin will, by default, prevent multiple instances from running
simultaneously. You can override this restriction by defining the
PIDGIN_MULTI_INST environment variable. If you do this, you may find the
-c parameter useful to specify unique configuration directories for each
instance (e.g. -c c:\home\.pidgin-alt). "
Windows environment variables (My Computer / Properties / Advanced /
Environment Variables) require you enter both a value and a variable.
I've tried entering "PIDGIN_MULTI_INST" in multiple places, but nothing
seems to work. What an I doing wrong, or where can I get more specific
information?
Thanks!
