Comment:

 Currently I am not getting this problem. This happens when the net speed
 is too slow. Average speed at my college is 3KBps. Sometimes it may go
 still go down. While my web pages open up eventually (after some retries)
 during that period but Pidgin seems to only get some of the data (which
 you mentioned as Roster). How occassionaly does Pidgin retries after
 failing to get the full roster?

 I am constantly bugged by 'SSL Handskake failed' and the 'Read Error'. The
 last one occurs very very often. I had tried using both GnuTLS and NSS.
 Currently I am using NSS.
