 Sean, while I don't have any examples off hand, this is a concern the
 translators have expressed on that mailing list.  The (generic) example
 they bring up is %s <verb>, because in some languages something in that
 should be conjugated differently.  %s in that case is a buddy's screenname
 or alias.  I think what they'd like is a way to mark a given buddy in the
 buddy list male or female.  We'd only be able to do it for buddies though.
 I'm not sure how fully solvable this is.
