 According to the [http://www.gnome.org/start/2.20/notes/en/ preliminary
 GNOME 2.20 release notes], GDK 2.12 will support the composite extension
 for X. The implementation is documented in the
 [http://library.gnome.org/devel/gdk/unstable/gdk-Windows.html unstable GDK
 reference] (functions gdk_window_set_composited and
 gdk_window_set_opacity).

 GDK code in SVN also contains a
 [http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/gtk%2B/trunk/gdk/win32/gdkwindow-
 win32.c?view=markup Win32 implementation] of gdk_window_set_opacity (no
 gdk_window_set_composited, though), so Windows is probably catered for as
 well. (I hope it will make it into 2.12.)

 I'm therefore asking for transparency/translucency support in GDK.
