 Thats a good idea, I tend to like text based interfaces anyway.

 Still, it would be nice to be able to run pidgin over a network.  After
 reading more, I'm pretty sure the root of the problem is that cairo, which
 is used by gtk, does not work efficiently in the absence of the Xrender
 extension.
