 I'm sorry for double posting, but I was thinking that we could merge these
 two views and let the user have the choice between (1) vertical or
 horizontal and (2) large [96px], medium [72px], small [48px] and none
 [current 2.1.x and 2.2.x interface].

 The spot for my menu in http://developer.pidgin.im/attachment/ticket/3135
 /pidgin-interface_proposal-20070918-03-20070916.png is bad placement, but
 I just wanted to show that this should be done. I believe the options
 should be held in the top menu, maybe as:

 Options > Avatars > Horizontal > Large
 Options > Avatars > Horizontal > Medium
 Options > Avatars > Horizontal > Small
 Options > Avatars > Vertical > Large
 Options > Avatars > Vertical > Medium
 Options > Avatars > Vertical > Small
 Options > Avatars > Classic
