 It's actually MULTIPLICATION X, not the letter x. We use the same
 character for Close buttons on tabs.

 The smallest icons we have are 16x16, and that's probably too large.

 I haven't tried the patch, but from looking at it, it seems your other
 issues are valid. You probably want to gtk_destroy_widget() the child,
 rather than gtk_widget_hiding the entire thing
