Comment:

 I just installed the Google Talk client and I am able to connect to the
 service.  It just seems that connecting to Google Talk via Pidgin is not
 working currently.

 I am trying to use it from work, so maybe your suspicion is correct,
 although why would the firewall block Pidgin but not Google Talk?
