 Since you're using the MSN "HTTP Method", it is trying to use port 80.
 Looking more closely at the log, it does actually make a connection
 successfully, but doesn't receive what it expects from the server an
 consequently aborts.

 The yahoo connection is using port 5050, you might be able to specify port
 80 in the account preferences and have it work.

 What is likely the case is that you're behind an intercepting proxy which
 isn't going to allow non HTTP traffic through (and may have other
 constraints).  If this is the case, using the yahoo on port 80 isn't going
 to work.

 The native clients frequently have built-in fallbacks and deal with
 restricted networks better than pidgin does.  If the pidgin's manually set
 MSN HTTP Method fallback isn't working, there isn't going to be a whole
 lot that we can do without knowing what the native client is doing
 differently.
