 Just as an update. I downloaded and installed yahoo messenger. Loaded up
 an avatar. Nothing changed on my friends computer. I had him restart his
 machine and the avatar showed up after that. I loaded up Pidgin with the
 same avatar and had my friend restart yahoo messenger. The avatar seemed
 to stick. However if I tried to change the picture it would blow the
 avatar away and he'd get just a black screen again.
